Watchung residents drop library lawsuit as council rescinds resolutions

The Borough Council and the eight residents who sued the council over its former plan to dissolve Watchung Library have agreed to wipe the slate clean.

In an arrangement initiated by Mayor-elect Keith Balla, the council voted unanimously Thursday to rescind its April and July resolutions to neither renovate the library nor build a new one in return for the residents dropping the lawsuit. The unanimous vote was met with considerable applause from the audience Thursday.

EDITORIAL: Historic Watchung election

The last time a Democrat was elected to office in Watchung, Bill Clinton was serving his final few months in the White House. Before that, you have to go back to the Lyndon B. Johnson years.

There’s a reason Watchung voters bucked the trend this year, electing three Democrats when only three had been elected in the previous 53 years. The reason was accountability, or a lack thereof from the all-Republican Borough Council.

Democrats Knegten and Goodloe, victorious in Watchung election, thank the voters

 Democrats Daryl Eisenberg Knegten and Lindsay Goodloe thanked both the voters and their election opponents in a Thursday, Nov. 8, statement noting their apparent victory in the Tuesday, Nov. 6, election for two seats on the Borough Council.

They said they had received phone calls of congratulations from their opponents, Republican incumbents David Mobus and Maria Alberto, earlier in the day.
